I wonder what ever happened
to those words
we used to say.

It happened to be

the first day of school

when rumors of tornadoes

whipped through town.

They took us by surprise,

scattering papers and plans

like some elaborate

slapstick routine:

a hoax of grand proportion.

It made us laugh for hours.
